A Day in the Life of an Account Coordinator at Ketner Group

Nine months ago, I acquired a new title: Account Coordinator. No longer a student or an intern, I wasn’t sure what the shift in designation meant for my day-to-day life. Turns out, it carried a lot of weight!

Every company is different, but for us here at Ketner Group, each team member wears multiple hats. With everyone pitching in, our roles and responsibilities can sometimes blend together. That being said, I’ve found my groove as an account coordinator. Follow along to get a glimpse into my everyday life!

The Daily Grind

A Typical Day

First of all, I don’t think a “typical day” exists when you work in public relations. Last-minute requests from clients can easily lead to an unforeseen project or task. More often than not, my days are a balancing act. With client work and my KG-specific responsibilities (like managing our blog content, for example), I’m seldom without a full plate.

Roles and Responsibilities

As an account coordinator, I am responsible for a myriad of tasks. However, my roles and responsibilities differ on each account as different clients need different kinds of support. For example, I take the lead on drafting social posts each week and assigning or writing weekly blog posts for one of my clients. For a different client, I create agendas outlining our most pressing priorities in preparation for weekly calls. I also take over KG’s social media accounts once a week, posting relevant company, client and industry news.

Though these weekly tasks tend to stay consistent, I keep a close eye on email to assist with client asks as they arise. One practice we have here at KG is to create rapid responses for our clients based on relevant trends and breaking news. To help with this, I subscribe to newsletters for various publications. Browsing through these articles, and flagging relevant news to be considered for a rapid response, is usually how I start my work day.

As the day progresses, I check things off my weekly to-do list as I work my way through each item. Meanwhile, I add new projects and tasks to my list as they come up. Before I sign off for the day, I clear out my inbox by moving each email into categorized folders.

What I’ve Learned

Task Management is Essential

With a whirlwind schedule where it’s hard to pinpoint what each day will look like, learning to manage tasks is pivotal. In my role as account coordinator, I’m often assigned tasks such as sending emails, drafting pitches and creating coverage reports. I’ve learned to take tasks as they come and ask my account leads and supervisors questions when I have them. Most importantly, I’ve learned the value of diligence. Keeping up with priorities and alerting account teams of changes to a timeline for a certain project diminishes stress and keeps everyone on track.

It’s Important to Have Fun Too

Serving our clients is why our agency exists, but having a good time while we do so benefits everyone in the long run! I’m lucky enough to work for a company that thinks having fun is important too. Whether we’re going out for lunch or a happy hour or chatting and cracking jokes after one of our Friday brainstorms, we don’t forget to incorporate fun into our workdays.

Ketner Group is Headed to a Career Fair Near You

It might only be February, but it’s time to start making your summer plans. And I’m not talking about vacation (well, maybe that too). It’s time to update your resume and look for a summer internship, or if you’re graduating — a grown-up job! For those lucky enough to live in Austin or NYC, Ketner Group is headed to a career fair near you.

What You Need to Know

When, you ask? Well, the magic date for Spring 2019 career fairs appears to be Feb. 27.

For UT Austin students, you can find Ketner Group at the Communication Job & Internship Fair. The event will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. CT on the 8th Floor of Darrell K. Royal in the North End Zone. If you’re a junior or senior with PR internship experience, we’d love for you to stop by and hear about our summer internship opportunities. Additionally, we’re always on the hunt for all-star account coordinators, so if you’re graduating this spring, then visit us to learn how you can start your career with KG.

Also on Feb. 27, we’ll be making our NYC internship fair debut at NYU. From 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., I will be at the NYU Kimmel Center, hunting for KG’s first-ever NYC intern. If you’re entering or in your junior or senior year of undergraduate studies or completed your first year of graduate school, and have relevant PR internship experience, I’d love to meet you!

How to Prepare

If this will be your first career or internship fair, don’t fret. Instead, check out our blogs for advice on career fairs and applying for PR jobs. You’ll find helpful tips on how to prepare, what to wear, and much more. If nothing else, I suggest spending some time researching the companies that will be attending and identifying which opportunities best align with your career goals and objectives. And if all else fails, make sure to bring plenty of copies of your resume!

Get To Know Our New Account Coordinator: Mikaela Cannizzo

Hi everyone! My name is Mikaela Cannizzo and I’m a recent graduate of the University of Texas at Austin. I am excited to be starting my first full-time job as an account coordinator at Ketner Group!

I was born in Los Angeles, but my childhood was split between Southern California and a suburb outside of Dallas. I moved to  Austin for college and decided to stick around. Although the variety of amazing restaurants and the beautiful hill country may have had something to do with that choice, my job opportunity with Ketner Group was the deciding factor.

Writing captured my heart at a young age. Whether it was writing papers for class or spending my free time coming up with an idea for a creative story, I loved the way writing allowed me to transform my thoughts into something comprehensive that could possibly resonate with others. During my high school years, I utilized my writing capabilities as the managing editor of the yearbook and a participant in an independent study and mentorship program, which gave me the opportunity to write articles for the Dallas Morning News.

My high school experiences led me to choose journalism as my major in college. I loved getting to learn more about the profession and pursue print journalism passionately as a member of the Daily Texan staff my sophomore and junior years and as an intern at the Dallas Business Journal last summer. Throughout those years, I also took on a job as a writing consultant, helping students in the communications school improve their writing. I decided to switch career paths slightly my senior year when my interest in public relations was sparked by the assignments and projects of the PR students I worked with.

Following through with this new direction, I spent the spring interning with Cohn & Wolfe, a public relations and global communications agency in downtown Austin. I enjoyed learning more about agency life and working with different clients on creating engaging content for their brands. Knowing that writing and storytelling are the core components of the PR profession, I couldn’t be more excited to continue in the field with Ketner Group!

When I’m not working or writing, I enjoy spending time at the lake, visiting restaurants and coffee shops and just exploring new places in Austin. While I’m thrilled to call Austin home, I also love to travel and am always down to plan a trip, even if it’s a spontaneous one!

Ketner Group Communications is an established, growing PR agency with an excellent reputation, a positive work environment and a commitment to work/life balance. We’re searching for a motivated and dynamic team member who is passionate about media relations and content development. The role of Account Coordinator (AC) will have limited day-to-day client relationships and will report to Account Supervisors. An AC on our team should be a team player, but also be highly dependable to adhere to project and client timelines on an individual basis. Ketner Group looks to its ACs to support Account Executives and/or Account Managers and help our teams execute on PR campaign strategies and tactics.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist Account Managers and/or Account Executives with staying on task for PR campaigns on assigned accounts
  • Execute media relations activities, including developing media lists, press release distribution, proactive pitching/media relations, editorial calendar management and speaking opp/award research and management
  • Develop and cultivate relationships with the appropriate press and analyst contacts on assigned accounts
  • Write content pieces such as press releases, articles and case studies
  • Participate in client calls and meetings
  • Help to brainstorm fresh, new campaign ideas for all KG accounts
  • Execute on social media tactics as needed for assigned accounts
  • Support Ketner Group team in new business activities and research
  • Contribute to Ketner Group social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter and blog

Candidate Qualities:

  • Strong writing skills; be prepared to submit writing samples
  • Confidence in handling media relations, including pitching trade and national media contacts
  • Effective communications skills, including the ability to clearly articulate the status of PR program/campaign activities to clients in person, over the phone or via email
  • Excellent research skills in finding appropriate media contacts, collecting supporting data/information for copywriting, identifying client award and event opportunities and conducting client competitor research
  • Ability to be self-accountable, self-motivated and proactive in staying on task with daily activities

Candidate Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, journalism or marketing
  • 1-3 years of PR experience (including internships) in an agency, brand or corporation
  • Retail technology or brand PR experience a plus, but not required
  • B2B and/or B2C experience highly valued, but not required
  • Experience with executing on social media tactics
  • Experience with Vocus, Hootsuite and Harvest a plus
